GitHub Trending: June — build-your-own-x, yt-dlp, Bitwarden, Whisper, Nango
The month's single most-starred repo hasn't had a commit in four months. Meanwhile, a YouTube policy change pushed yt-dlp to require an external JavaScript runtime — and drove 8,700 new stars to a downloader that started life as a youtube-dl fork.
This month: build-your-own-x (514k-star programming curriculum), yt-dlp (video downloader forced to add a Deno dependency), bitwarden/server and bitwarden/clients (password manager appearing twice after a licensing scare), and NangoHQ/nango (AI integration platform from YC W23).
The list's throughline isn't AI hype — it's platform anxiety. YouTube tightened its defenses, Bitwarden briefly went proprietary (then reversed), and a Chinese lab shipped a Whisper alternative that claims 170x realtime speed. Developers starred the escape hatches.
| Repo | What it does | Monthly growth |
|---|---|---|
| codecrafters-io/build-your-own-x | Curated tutorials for building compilers, databases, OS kernels from scratch | +15,082 stars |
| yt-dlp/yt-dlp | Feature-rich audio/video downloader | +8,709 stars |
| openai/whisper | OpenAI speech-to-text model | +3,407 stars |
| NangoHQ/nango | Open-source platform for product integrations with AI | +3,077 stars |
| modelscope/FunASR | Industrial-grade ASR: 170x realtime, 50+ languages, OpenAI-compatible API | +1,901 stars |
| usememos/memos | Self-hosted, Markdown-native quick-capture notes | +1,372 stars |
| hyprwm/Hyprland | Dynamic tiling Wayland compositor for Linux | +815 stars |
| bitwarden/server | Bitwarden backend infrastructure (API, database, Docker) | +635 stars |
| SerenityOS/serenity | Custom Unix-like OS with 90s desktop aesthetics | +329 stars |
| bitwarden/clients | Bitwarden client apps (web, browser extension, desktop) | +294 stars |
Platform anxiety, not AI hype
Look at who gained stars this month and the pattern is harder to dismiss than the usual AI wave: five of the ten repos are tools that let you run something yourself instead of trusting a platform. codecrafters-io/build-your-own-x topped 514k stars with a 15,082-star month, despite its last commit landing in February 2026. yt-dlp/yt-dlp surged because YouTube made downloading harder. Bitwarden appeared on the list twice — server and clients — on the residue of a licensing scare. usememos/memos and hyprwm/Hyprland round out the self-hosted corner. When a platform tightens its grip, developers find the exit and star it.
codecrafters-io/build-your-own-x — a 514k-star curriculum that nobody updates
+15,082 stars this month · 514,988 total · Markdown
No code. No recent commits. Just a long Markdown file linking to tutorials that teach you how to build a compiler, a web server, a database, an operating system, a regex engine — from scratch, in whatever language you prefer. That is the entire repo, and it keeps going viral month after month.
The repo is now a referral funnel for CodeCrafters, the paid learning platform that acquired it from the original maintainer. But the content it links to is community-built and mostly free. HN users noticed the handoff:
"Interesting, this page has been around for a while and did not used to belong to codecrafters.io. I guess they bought the original repo so it would redirect here?" — eatonphil, HN commenter
The irony is complete: a repo about building your own things was itself acquired by a company selling subscriptions to help you build your own things. It still dominates GitHub Trending because the underlying desire — understanding a technology by building it — does not go away.
yt-dlp/yt-dlp — YouTube forced it to add Deno
+8,709 stars this month · 170,329 total · Python
In November 2025, yt-dlp announced that YouTube was serving JavaScript challenges it couldn't solve in Python alone. The fix: an external JavaScript runtime. Deno ships as the default; Node.js, Bun, and QuickJS are supported but disabled by default for security reasons. The HN thread on the announcement hit 1,106 points and 627 comments.
One commenter captured why the Deno choice was notable:
"I was surprised they went with Deno instead of Node, but since Deno has a readily available single-exe distribution that removes a lot of potential pain." — adzm, HN commenter
A separate thread, "Upcoming new requirements for YouTube downloads," gathered 1,244 points and 611 comments in September 2025. Together those two threads represent one of the larger HN conversations about a single open-source tool in recent memory. The stars accumulating now are a delayed reaction — users who saw the coverage, put off upgrading, then came back when they actually needed to download something.
The issues tracker confirms the friction: 2,537 open issues, with cookie extraction from Chrome and subtitle rate-limiting among the most-discussed problems. yt-dlp is infrastructure at this point, and YouTube keeps making its job harder.
bitwarden/server and bitwarden/clients — double-listed on a licensing hangover
+635 stars (server) and +294 stars (clients) this month
Bitwarden appears on the trending list twice. The reason traces to October 2024, when a desktop update introduced a dependency with a non-OSI license clause. The GitHub issue "Desktop version 2024.10.0 is no longer free software" hit HN at 260 points and 96 comments. Bluesky posts called for forks. One wrote: "Looks like Bitwarden is asking for a fork." Another: "Time to migrate everything to KeePassXC people."
Bitwarden resolved it within weeks, switching the SDK license to GPL3. But the episode had a lasting effect: users who had avoided trusting the cloud offering went to audit the self-hosted server. bitwarden/server is a C# backend you can run entirely yourself. Its most-discussed open issue this month is an MSSQL restart bug from a 2026.3.0 upgrade with 83 comments — evidence that a real self-hosted user base is actively running the thing.
Stars on bitwarden/clients come partly from users verifying the license is clean; stars on bitwarden/server come from users preparing to not need Bitwarden's cloud at all.
openai/whisper and modelscope/FunASR — two speech engines trending simultaneously
+3,407 stars (Whisper) and +1,901 stars (FunASR) this month
Two speech-recognition repos trending in the same month is not coincidence. OpenAI's openai/whisper is the incumbent: 102k stars, widely deployed, but not updated since April 2026. ModelScope's modelscope/FunASR is the challenger from Alibaba's DAMO Academy: 170x realtime on GPU, 50+ languages, speaker diarization and emotion detection bundled in, OpenAI-compatible API, and an MCP server added in version 1.3.3.
Why is Whisper gaining stars while a faster alternative exists? Because Whisper's problems became famous. The HN thread "Complete silence is always hallucinated as 'ترجمة نانسي قنقر' in Arabic" hit 568 points and 340 comments. The phrase translates to "Translation by Nancy Qanqar" — a subtitle credit that Whisper absorbed from YouTube training data and now reproduces whenever it hears silence. The discussion was partly amusement, partly alarm:
"Whisper is unusable IMO because of the hallucinations. Widely documented. Removing silence from audio clips helps, but even then it will auto correct grammar, translating bilingual speech, etc." — dandiep, HN commenter
Users who encounter that thread star Whisper to bookmark the problem, then search for FunASR. Both repos benefit from the same conversation.
NangoHQ/nango — the integration plumbing AI agents actually need
+3,077 stars this month · 10,464 total · TypeScript
Nango is the least dramatic repo on the list and possibly the most practically useful for teams building AI products. It handles OAuth flows, credential storage, API syncing, and token refresh for 400+ APIs — the plumbing every AI agent needs and nobody wants to write. YC W23 alumni, open-source core, source-available license (which drew an HN comment flagging the non-OSI status at launch).
The star surge follows Nango's 2026 "Tool Router" — a layer that lets AI agents discover and call API integrations without hardcoding which tools exist. For teams building with LangChain or LlamaIndex, Nango positions itself as the credentials and data-sync substrate underneath the agent. The Launch HN from April 2024 drew 190 points and 74 comments, including pointed questions about token encryption and multi-tenant security architecture.
Nango is not yet a household name. But managed auth and API sync for AI agents is a category every production AI team eventually hits, and there are few credible open-source options in it.
What June reveals
The most-starred repo this month has no recent code. The second-most-starred was forced to restructure by a platform's anti-scraping countermeasures. Two password manager repos trend on the memory of a license controversy that was reversed before the year started. This is not a month that shows what developers are building. It shows what they are afraid of losing access to.
Every repo here is either a self-hosted alternative to a cloud service, a tool for downloading content before a platform removes it, or a curriculum for building infrastructure from scratch. Platform dependency turns out to be a feature worth 15,000 stars a month.

GitHub Trending: Last week — Sniffnet, Trivy, FunASR, PowerToys, Astro
Two of this week's top five GitHub Trending repos are security and privacy tools — and one of them just recovered from the most-covered supply-chain attack of the year. Trivy, the container vulnerability scanner, was compromised in March by a threat actor who turned it into the weapon. It picked up 638 stars this week anyway.
