GitHub Trending: Today — n8n, yt-dlp, Plane, Superset, TinaCMS
Four of the five repos trending on GitHub today pitch themselves as the open-source version of a tool you already pay for. The most-cited thread ever written about the one with the most stars is titled "n8n is not open source and your project is gaslighting its users."
Today's trending list is a catalogue of escape routes from SaaS bills: n8n (visual workflow automation against Zapier), Plane (project tracking against Jira), Apache Superset (BI dashboards against Tableau), and TinaCMS (Git-backed visual CMS).
But "open source" is doing uneven work here. n8n runs on a fair-code license the OSI won't recognize, Plane gates SSO behind a paid contract, and the one genuinely community-run tool, yt-dlp, just told users they must install a separate JavaScript runtime to keep downloading from YouTube.
Five repos trended on GitHub today, and they share one through-line: each is something you install so you can stop paying a monthly bill. Here is the shelf before the read.
| Repo | What it does | Replaces | Today |
|---|---|---|---|
| n8n-io/n8n | Visual + code workflow automation, 400+ integrations | Zapier, Make | +172 |
| yt-dlp/yt-dlp | Command-line audio/video downloader | a category of its own | +326 |
| makeplane/plane | Issues, sprints, docs, roadmaps | Jira, Linear, ClickUp | +77 |
| apache/superset | SQL exploration and BI dashboards | Tableau, Looker | +25 |
| tinacms/tinacms | Git-backed headless CMS with visual editing | Contentful, Sanity | +58 |
The word "open" is carrying different weights
Four of the five lead with "open-source alternative to [paid thing]." It is the strongest pitch in 2026: self-host, own your data, skip the per-seat invoice. But read the licenses and the gap widens. Apache Superset is a graduated Apache-Foundation project. Plane ships its community edition under AGPL-3.0 and reserves SSO and air-gapped deploys for a paid contract. And n8n, the repo with the most stars on today's board, is not open source at all by the OSI's definition. The fifth, yt-dlp, is the only one with no commercial parent to please, and it is the one currently fighting for its life.
n8n-io/n8n — workflow automation that won't call itself open source
+172 stars today · 193k total · TypeScript
For ops engineers, growth teams, and indie builders who would otherwise wire services together in Zapier or Make, n8n is the self-hosted answer: a visual canvas where each node is an API call, with raw-code escape hatches and 400+ prebuilt integrations. Its current pull is AI, via native nodes for LLM calls and agent loops, which is what put it back on the daily board.
What is worth knowing before you adopt it is the license. n8n's source sits under the Sustainable Use License, which permits internal and non-commercial use but blocks you from selling it as a service. The company coined "fair-code" for the model, and the OSI does not recognize it as open source. This is old ground on HN: the most-cited thread about the project is literally issue #40, titled "n8n is not open source and your project is gaslighting its users." Founder Jan Oberhauser owned the framing in that thread rather than dodging it.
"It actually resulted in the creation of fair-code and later the Sustainable Use License." — n8n's founder, replying in the thread
For internal automation, none of this matters. If your business model is "n8n, but hosted," it matters a great deal.
yt-dlp/yt-dlp — the downloader that now needs a JavaScript engine
+326 stars today · 172k total · Python
yt-dlp is the tool archivists, researchers, podcasters, and ordinary users reach for to pull a video or audio track off YouTube and a thousand other sites when they want a file instead of a stream. It posted the largest gain on the board today, and the timing is not a coincidence: the project just crossed a threshold that lit up two separate 600-comment HN threads.
The change, spelled out in issue #15012, is that full YouTube support now requires an external JavaScript runtime. YouTube's player ships obfuscated JS that yt-dlp has to execute to derive each stream's signature, and the old approach of reimplementing that logic in Python finally became unmaintainable, a turn foreshadowed in issue #14404. Deno is the default runtime because it ships as a single self-contained executable; Node, Bun, and QuickJS work but are off by default. Commenters noted QuickJS can take 20 minutes to run the player code, which is why a fast JIT runtime is suddenly load-bearing.
The reason people keep installing it showed up in the thread: the official product is often worse than the workaround.
"I'm a paying YouTube Premium subscriber. ... The app got stuck at 'waiting for download...' I gave up after an hour." — a Premium subscriber whose official offline download hung
makeplane/plane — Jira's open-source challenger, with a paid ceiling
+77 stars today · 52k total · TypeScript
Plane targets startup and open-source teams who want Jira's structure (issues, cycles, modules, roadmaps) without Atlassian's pricing or hosting. It ships Kanban, list, calendar, and spreadsheet views, plus importers from Jira, Linear, Asana, and ClickUp to lower the migration cost. The community edition is AGPL-3.0; SSO, air-gapped Kubernetes, and compliance SLAs live in a commercial Enterprise build.
The recurring HN question is whether self-hosting is the feature or the catch. A volunteer evaluating it for a cash-strapped non-profit asked the practical version directly:
"They cannot afford to pay for any cloud service... Does Plane offer all pro features for open source instances as well?" — a volunteer sizing up Plane for a non-profit
The honest answer is "most of them, minus the enterprise bits," which is precisely the AGPL-plus-paid-tier model. Plenty of teams are fine with that, and the company also runs the hosted version for people who, as another commenter put it, simply do not want to operate a Jira replacement themselves.
apache/superset — BI dashboards without the Tableau invoice
+25 stars today · 73k total · TypeScript
Superset is for data and analytics teams who want SQL-driven exploration and shareable dashboards without Tableau or Looker licensing. It connects to most SQL databases and layers a no-code chart builder over a SQL IDE, and because it is a graduated Apache project rather than a company's open-core release, there is no paid tier waiting to gate the good parts. In practice it is often deployed as a controlled window onto production data.
"We use this at my ginormous employer in order to give devs limited access to production data." — an engineer using it as a read-only window on prod
The standing debate is positioning. Newcomers compare it to Grafana, which is metrics-first, and to Metabase, the friendlier BI tool; Superset's pitch is more power in exchange for more setup. Veterans remember a "rats nest of Python," so judge the current release, not its 2017 reputation.
tinacms/tinacms — visual editing bolted onto your Git repo
+58 stars today · 13k total · TypeScript
TinaCMS aims at developers running JAMstack, Astro, or Next sites who want non-technical teammates to edit content visually while the source of truth stays as Markdown in Git. That is its distinguishing bet against Contentful or Sanity: no external content database, just your repo plus an editing layer on top. Cassidy Williams' widely shared Astro-plus-Tina blog template is the canonical "here is how it feels" reference doing the rounds on Bluesky.
The caveat from real use is weight. A developer who shipped it on Gatsby warned it lands in the client bundle:
"It's incredibly heavy, and due to it being integrated tightly in your code it's shipped in the bundle.js file when using gatsby." — a developer who ran it on a Gatsby site
Check your bundle size before you commit to it.
What today's board is really selling
The pattern is not "open source is winning." It is that self-hosting has become the headline feature and "open source" the word used to sell it, even when the license says something narrower. The useful reflex when a repo trends on that promise: open the LICENSE file before the README. Superset gives you Apache, Plane gives you AGPL with a paid ceiling, n8n gives you fair-code, and yt-dlp gives you the realest thing on the list: a tool with no company to answer to, which is also why it has to keep rebuilding itself every time YouTube changes the lock.
