Godot bans AI-authored code, but the real change targets new contributors

The Godot Foundation now requires all engine code to be human-authored, with AI limited to code completion and find-and-replace. Buried in the same policy: new contributors can no longer submit large features or refactors without permission.

In brief

The policy defines a new contributor as anyone with three or fewer merged pull requests and bars that group from large features or refactors without a maintainer's sign-off. AI help is capped at code completion, regex and find-and-replace, and any further AI use must be disclosed.

A GodotJS maintainer backs the call for this project while warning it would be wrong for most others; another developer notes Godot's plain-text scene files make it unusually friendly to the AI it is now refusing.

The policy: human-authored code, AI only for regex and find-and-replace

The Godot Foundation's 2026 contribution policy draws a hard line on authorship.

"We require all code to be human authored. AI assistance should be limited to menial things (like code completion, regex, or find and replace)." (the Godot Foundation)

Anything beyond that must be disclosed in the pull request. The reasoning is about accountability, not taste.

"AI cannot take responsibility, and we can't trust heavy users of AI to understand their code enough to fix it." (the Godot Foundation)

The document ties review to succession: reviewers are training the people who will one day maintain the engine.

"Reviewers generally feel that their efforts are contributing to educating a new contributor (who may become a future maintainer/reviewer)." (the Godot Foundation)

The clause with the widest reach is separate from AI. New contributors, defined as anyone with three or fewer merged pull requests, can no longer open large features or significant refactors without a maintainer's explicit permission.

The current maintainer of GodotJS, the TypeScript bindings, called it correct here while warning against copying it elsewhere.

"I think it's the right call for Godot, but probably not for other projects." (the maintainer of GodotJS)

He added that LLMs have produced genuinely useful work for Godot, including a functional WebGPU implementation. Another commenter pasted two pull requests as exhibits and drew his own conclusion about which rule matters.

"That's why the real big change in the policy is that new contributors can't take big features or refactors." (a reader who linked the offending pull requests)

The founder of KIProtect named the contradiction the industry is sitting on.

"the valuation of these AI providers is based on the assumption that all code … will be written using AI … on the other hand almost all popular open source projects fight to keep AI contributions out." (the founder of KIProtect)

A developer with two years on the engine offered the darkest reading, and a twist: Godot may be unusually well suited to the tool it is now turning away.

"the best engine right now for AI-assisted coding is Godot! It has plain text scene files" (a developer with two years on Godot)
