iPadOS 27 now shows students your private notes while you AirPlay a presentation

A teacher mirrors an iPad to a projector, taps over to a second app, and the whole screen goes up on the wall.

In brief

Teddy Svoronos says iPadOS 26 behaved correctly: with multiple windows open during AirPlay, the audience used to see only the presenting app. In 27, tapping any other app mirrors everything, poll results included.

Keynote exits the presentation, PowerPoint hangs, GoodNotes recovers. The thread argues over whether hardware deadlines excuse it.

The regression

In his post, an instructor describes the workflow: audience sees slides or a handout on the external screen, presenter keeps notes and live poll results in other windows. On iPadOS 27, touching anything but the presenting app makes the external display show the entire iPad screen. Behavior differs by app: GoodNotes returns to presenter view, Keynote quits the presentation, PowerPoint gets stuck and needs a restart. He gives no workaround, only a feedback ID (FB23615646) and the line that he can't recommend the OS to anyone who teaches from an iPad.

"Hardware has deadlines"

One commenter, who spent a career in embedded devices, said software is always squeezed by hardware schedules, and that "even Apple can't keep a lid on feature creep".

Replies were not kind. A commenter countered: "No one forces Apple to stick to yearly releases. No one forces Apple to cut down on QA." And Tikhon Jelvis, a programming-languages researcher separated the cases: the embedded analogy fits constrained devices, not Apple's general-purpose ones, and production pressure "is a choice the organization, collectively, makes."

Another reader noted the point most in the author's favor: this was an existing feature that stopped working, not new hardware being integrated, which is what a basic regression test exists to catch.

If you present from an iPad, stay on iPadOS 26 until this is fixed.
