California will hand every driver's license to a private nonprofit's national database (papersplease.org)
California reversed course and will fund uploading every driver's license and state ID into SPEXS, a national database operated by AAMVA, a private nonprofit. The lever was REAL ID: comply, or watch California IDs stop working at airports.
An attorney in the thread flagged the framing: this is not really about driving, since a state ID gates access to basic services and is closer to a right. Others noted the feds could already scrape the data, making the move more posture than new exposure.
