475 upvotes for a GitHub issue Anthropic has not answered yet

A GitHub issue filed against the anthropics/claude-code repository asking for an official Claude Desktop build for Linux has attracted hundreds of upvotes, a thread full of Linux developers describing their workarounds, and exactly one Anthropic team member response — four words: "we're looking into it."

In brief

The issue shows Anthropic already runs Ubuntu 22.04 inside Claude Desktop via Cowork, already ships linux-x64 and linux-arm64 CLI binaries — making the missing desktop build a policy gap, not a technical one.

The unofficial repackage has 4,500 stars; its maintainer runs a bank of VMs just for compositor testing. One Anthropic engineer responded in the HN thread: four words, no timeline.

Discord ships Linux with audio capture and three package formats. The thread asks not whether it's hard, but whether Linux is in the target market.

A GitHub Issue Becomes a Community Vote on Anthropic's Linux Commitment

The GitHub issue #65697 filed against the anthropics/claude-code repository is unusually well-argued for a feature request. Filed by powell-clark, it runs through the technical case, steelmans the counter-arguments, and ends with a fallback ask — not "ship this" but "tell us where it stands." It landed on Hacker News in the thread and accumulated 475 points.

What the Issue Actually Claims

The core argument is that Anthropic has already done most of the engineering work. The Claude Code CLI ships with signed apt, dnf, and apk repositories. Anthropic builds linux-x64 and linux-arm64 binaries, including musl variants. Most pointedly: Cowork — Claude Desktop's agent sandbox — already boots Ubuntu 22.04 internally on macOS via Apple's Virtualization.framework, then runs bubblewrap and seccomp inside that VM. The Linux execution path exists inside the product. What is missing is a published build.

The issue also cites market data: Stack Overflow's 2025 survey puts Ubuntu as the primary OS for 27.7% of professional developers. StatCounter shows Linux above 5% of US desktops and 16.21% in India. The argument is that the addressable audience is not a rounding error.

Features unavailable to Linux users: desktop extensions testing (required for Claude Code plugin development), computer use, the Cowork agent, and desktop dictation. Plugin developers currently have to switch to macOS or Windows for every test iteration.

The fallback request is modest: if a first-party build is not planned, say so officially. Acknowledge the recommended community project. Release a one-off security review summary. Give Linux users explicit guidance on credential and MCP configuration security.

The Thread Is a Catalog of Workarounds and Frustrations

The unofficial maintainer appeared directly:

"The main reason most companies don't publish Linux electron apps is fragmentation. If you're doing anything more than rendering a webpage as an app, it starts to get complicated. I've got a bank of VMs setup for testing, and I still need it up." — maintainer of the unofficial claude-desktop-debian package

The one official Anthropic voice in the thread was Boris from the team:

"we're looking into it." — Boris, Anthropic team member

Four words, no timeline, no commitment. The thread noted it.

The contradiction the issue is really pointing at was stated most cleanly by a long-time contributor:

"I love the dueling messages on AI — 'It'll make software easy and replace all software jobs!' / 'Sorry, a Linux client is too hard and too much work!'" — a commenter on the structural irony

A technical co-founder with 32,000 karma drew a more careful line about what he actually wants:

"For software development use of Claude, I'd be happy if the claude CLI executable does everything I need, within the Linux KVM VM sandboxes I create for the work, without a desktop client. The cleaner and more trustworthy, the better." — a technical co-founder and founding-engineer type

His point is that the desktop client is not the only vector — and that a proprietary desktop agent with access to the host system raises trust questions the CLI inside a sandbox does not.

The Discord comparison, offered by another commenter, stings:

"Discord puts this nugget: 'We've ported our Rust-based updater to Linux, allowing Linux to update itself just like on Windows. Additionally, we now support .rpm and .pkg.tar.zst package formats for installation.' They have more challenging clients: have to deal with screencapture, audio capture, audio routing, meanwhile supporting 3 different package repositories." — a developer pointing to Discord's Linux support track record

The Gap Between Rhetoric and Shipping

The issue predates the HN thread. What makes it a story is the response pattern: a community repackage accumulates 4,500 stars, an HN post accumulates 475 votes, the Anthropic team member response is four words and no timeline. The technical barriers are real — Linux desktop fragmentation, compositor differences, Wayland, packaging formats — but they are the same barriers Discord, Slack, VS Code, and dozens of other Electron apps have navigated. The question the thread is actually asking is not "is it hard" but "is Linux in the target market." So far Anthropic has not answered that question.
