Wired exposed a secret network of tech elites planning the future, and the most damning detail is that it runs on Airtable

Esquire called it a cabal of crazies. The thread read the underlying Wired report and reached a flatter verdict: it's a Bilderberg-style social club whose membership records sit in a no-code spreadsheet, and whose big idea is that AI will reorder everything within a few years.

In brief

The leaked 'Dialog' network, linked to Peter Thiel, kept returning to one theme: AI will reorder work, war, education and belief within a few years.

The puncture line: a secret cabal running the world, on AirTable. Wired never used the word 'cabal' that Esquire's headline did.

The story under the headline

Esquire's commentary, There Is a Cabal of Elite Crazies Trying to Control the World, riffs on a Wired investigation that surfaced the membership of "Dialog," a private, invitation-only network associated with Peter Thiel. The thread, which actually read the Wired piece, spent most of its energy deflating Esquire's framing rather than amplifying it:

"I guess Esquire didn't read far enough into the Wired article to discover that this is a tech industry version of similar gatherings like Bilderberg or various WEF side events that have long been known to exist. They're not generally called 'cabals' (you'll note Wired did not use this term) because… they don't seem to be much more than glorified social clubs." — a commenter contrasting Esquire's framing with the Wired source

The detail that does more than the adjective

The image that stuck wasn't sinister, it was mundane — and funnier for it:

"The most surreal part of this from the Wired article… 'The records sit in Airtable.' A secret cabal running the world. On AirTable." — a reader quoting the Wired report

And the content of the meetings deflated the menace further:

"I should be afraid of them, but then I read this: 'registrants returned again and again to the same theme: that AI will reorder work, war, education, and belief within a few years.' lmao. nvm. they're idiots." — a commenter quoting the reported meeting theme

The mundane version is the scarier one

It's tempting to file this under "rich people LARPing as a shadow government" and move on, and the thread mostly does. But the flat reading is worth holding onto for a non-obvious reason. The interesting fact isn't that powerful people gather privately — Bilderberg has done it for seventy years. It's that this particular group's organizing conviction, recorded in a shared Airtable, is that AI will rewrite work, war, education and belief on a timescale of a few years, and that they're positioning accordingly. The conspiracy theory is silly. The shared premise driving real capital allocation is not, and it's the part worth watching even after the word "cabal" gets laughed out of the room.
