Google Search fell below half of Alphabet's revenue, and Cloud doubled to $30.7B
For 31 straight quarters Search made 52.8% to 62.0% of Alphabet's revenue. In the quarter to September 2026 it made 49.7%.
Search brought in $63.4B, up 12%, but Google Cloud grew 103% to $30.7B and the rest of Alphabet grew 40%. So the share fell because everything else got bigger, not because Search shrank.
The sharpest thread reaction came from a reader whose part-number search surfaced the answer only as an ad.
Search grew 12% and still lost the majority

The tally comes from Kadoa's breakdown of Alphabet's quarterly reports. Total revenue in the quarter to September 2026 was $128B. Search contributed $63.4B, 49.7% of the total and 5.6 points less share than a year earlier, while the remaining lines added up to $64.2B.
| Quarter | Search | Search share | Cloud | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sep 2026 | $63.4B | 49.7% | $30.7B | $128B |
| Jun 2026 | $63.3B | 52.8% | $24.8B | $120B |
| Mar 2026 | $60.4B | 55.0% | $20.0B | $110B |
| Sep 2025 | $56.6B | 55.3% | $15.2B | $102B |
Cloud went from 4.4% of revenue in December 2018 to 24.1% now. YouTube ads ($11.2B) and subscriptions, platforms and devices ($14.3B) round out the rest.
"Found it via ads and not search"
The thread skipped the revenue mix and went to what the shift feels like from the user's chair. One commenter searching raw part numbers described the moment the ad became the only relevant result:
"A few days ago a Google found me something I was searching for, but via ads and not search." — a commenter searching obscure part numbers
The reply that landed hardest turned it into a complaint:
"Consumer searches for $FOO. $FOO does not show up in the search results. At this point, the search is useless to users." — a long-time commenter replying
One commenter claimed Google is deleting long-tail pages from its index so that only "primary sources" remain for AI chat to cite (claim in the thread); nothing in the Kadoa data tests that, and the thread offered no evidence for it.
Users already switched the order
A reader who looks for products described the flip in habits: models first, Search "as the last resort" (a commenter comparing results). Search revenue still rose 12% year over year, so the habit change is not yet visible in the number. If it shows up, Cloud's 103% will be carrying the company's growth story on its own.
