Mistral releases a 1-trillion-parameter model as 'open weights', and readers go straight to clause 2 (mistral.ai)

Mistral published the weights of Large 4, a 1-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with about 52B active parameters, priced at $0.70 per million input tokens on its own API. The licence is a modified MIT that bars anyone running a Model-as-a-Service business from using it commercially without a separate deal.

A commenter who pasted that clause called the 'open' label misleading; others answered that nobody expected more.

Not just a headline — the discussion unpacked

The top HN threads: facts from the discussions, both sides, insider voices. Email, Telegram, or RSS.

Google Search fell below half of Alphabet's revenue, and Cloud doubled to $30.7B (kadoa.com)

Search brought in $63.4B, up 12%, but Google Cloud grew 103% to $30.7B and the rest of Alphabet grew 40%. So the share fell because everything else got bigger, not because Search shrank.

The sharpest thread reaction came from a reader whose part-number search surfaced the answer only as an ad.

An Edge exploit chain with no memory corruption starts by visiting microsoft.com (blog.orange.tw)

Edge auto-creates and signs into a Microsoft account profile when you visit a Microsoft site, and a CORS misconfiguration on assets.msn.com lets any website read the signed-in email. From there the chain abuses a navigation throttle, a popup whitelist and a diagnostic-log file write to launch a planted telnet.exe.

It earned $175,000 at Pwn2Own Berlin 2026, and its author says no AI was used to build it.

Redraw the world by IPv4 addresses and a thread argues about India's 47 million (iptrust.co)

The map swaps square kilometres for addresses: a country's area equals its IPv4 share times the world's ~135 million km² of land. The thread immediately asked why India has 47M addresses and China 358M with similar populations.

A reader proposing to just lengthen IPv4 was told, politely and in detail, why every router would break.

DoorDash will pay $17B cash-heavy for Instacart, and won't close until 2027 or 2028 (about.doordash.com)

DoorDash offered $65 per Instacart share, about $17B in equity value, with at least 75% in cash backed by a JPMorgan bridge loan. It expects to close in late 2027 or the first half of 2028 and says grocers will be free to use any delivery platform.

Hacker News largely skipped antitrust and argued about whether anyone should pay delivery fees at all.

Five AI assistants quoted 3,167 statistics, and only 40% led back to a study that agrees (trakkr.ai)

Four statistics, including that 44% of salespeople give up after one follow-up, were quoted by all five assistants with no study behind them anywhere. Company blogs made up 54% of first citations, and only 37% of those were sourced.

On the thread, a commenter showed the same failure live: a 70% PHP figure repeated by every article on one exploit.

Martin Fowler wants nobody to let an LLM write the first draft (martinfowler.com)

Fowler calls LLM prose an uncanny valley and says writing is how he thinks, so delegating the draft delegates the thinking. His own concessions are specific: Jim Highsmith uses an LLM because of Parkinson's, and he accepts that.

Readers disagreed over whether the problem is the voice or just bad writing.

The US added 20.2 GWh of batteries in a quarter, about 96 seconds of peak demand (electrek.co)

SEIA and Benchmark counted 20.2 GWh in Q2 2026, with Arizona at a record 6.2 GWh, while residential storage fell 27%. A commenter divided it by US peak demand and got 96 seconds.

Another said the battery's real job is milliseconds-fast smoothing of spot prices, not backup.
