Lapp knot

Knot-tiers pinned it fast: a slipped sheet bend, a join sailors have used for generations. The thread's sharper turn was that the clever knot may be beside the point, since most loose ties, one commenter argued, are just a granny knot tied where a square knot belongs, no new technique required.

And the very loop that makes this one adjustable is, a programming-language maintainer warned, exactly what makes it less secure; several people said skip knots entirely and use a cord lock.
