California holds 105 of these cities, New York 41, New Jersey 26. The national typical starter home is still $198,649, so the gap between the headline and the median is the whole story.
A founder who sold his company for eight figures wrote that he can barely afford a condo in Jersey City, and that the homes around him are not even selling. Others doubted the count, noting Zillow never publishes the actual city names.
